The Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation of Barcelona is a centennial institution -it was founded in 1886-, but its history goes back to the Middle Ages as the Consulate of the Sea or the Royal Assembly of Commerce.
The basic law of the official chambers of commerce, industry and navigation (Law 3/1993, of March 22nd) expresses its nature as a corporation governed by Public Law.
Today, Barcelona's Chamber of Commerce is one of the most representative institutions of Catalan society and a point of reference of the first order for the country's socio-economic arena. The Chamber of Barcelona works to improve the results of companies. On the one hand, it offers services that companies can use individually, on the other, it carries out general interest actions that encourage the promotion of the country's economic and business activity and which, indirectly, also favour each company.
The Chamber's corporate headquarters are located in the Casa Llotja de Mar. Since the 15th century, the most representative commercial institutions have carried out their activities in this emblematic building. It is an historic and artistic monument to the Neo-classical style, and conserves one of the most interesting collections of Neo-classical sculpture in our country. Today's building was constructed in the 18th century on the old Mediaeval building. Inside, the Contract Room - one of the most important split-level ensembles of Medieval Gothic architecture in the Mediterranean - is still carefully preserved. |
