With external trade soaring in the times of British occupation in the early nineteenth century, traders in Mauritius felt the need for a Chamber of Commerce. In 1827, an Ordinance establishing the rules of such a Chamber was adopted and twelve members of the Chamber elected. However, this Chamber was dissolved as early as ten months later. Another attempt to set up a Chamber also met with little success in 1829. In 1847, a slump in the British sugar market negatively affected the trading houses which had lent money to sugar cane planters in Mauritius. In the absence of an arbitration tribunal for the settlement of disputes and conflicts in trade-related areas, a Chamber of Commerce was viewed as the best solution for this situation.
In October 1849, traders gathered to give a new impetus to the 1827 Ordinance establishing a Chamber of Commerce. They were successful in their endeavour and the constitutive assembly comprising all members of the new Chamber of Commerce took place on the 22nd January 1850. Three days later, Mr. Louis L閏helle, a representative of sworn brokers, was elected as the first President, Mr. Robert Stein as Vice President and Mr. Volcy Senneville as Treasurer. Mr Francis Channell, a British reporter, was appointed Secretary of the Chamber in 1850.
Such is the origin of the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), the oldest non-profit institution of the country. Since its final launching in 1850 till nowadays, the MCCI has known, besides 70 Presidents and 11 Secretary Generals, a definite evolution on all fronts. Its appellation was altered from "Chamber of Commerce" to the "Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry" in 1965 when the need for industrialisation was felt in anticipation of the independence of the island, in order to widen the perspectives of the Chamber.
From a purely consultative body, as designed in the middle of the 19th century, the MCCI is now a landmark in the economic scenery of Mauritius. It participates actively in the socio-economic development of the country and it is the voice of the business community. There has been major improvements in the range and quality of services it provides, and the number of members and employees, which nowadays stand at above 400 and 37 respectively, is in continuous expansion.
Internally, it is well structured and managed, and the top competencies in its team ensure highly professional services. Its various links, affiliations and contacts with international organisations (the International Chamber of Commerce among others) further widen the scope of its activities. In a nutshell, the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has succeeded in acquiring the reputation of being an efficient and trustworthy organisation of the private sector, both locally and at the international level.
